Overview

Slots are casino games in which you spin reels of symbols and are paid for matching combinations on a payline. A random number generator decides every spin. Each slot publishes a return-to-player (RTP), typically somewhere in the mid-90s percent.

A slot machine has reels with symbols. You choose a stake, press spin and the reels stop at random. If the symbols that stop on an active payline match a winning combination, the game pays according to its paytable. Every spin is decided by a random number generator (RNG), so no spin can be predicted and past results do not matter.

Winzap describes several types: classic slots (three reels, few paylines, easy to learn), video slots (five reels or more, bonus rounds, free spins and wilds), multi-payline slots, and progressive jackpot slots, where part of each bet feeds a prize that grows until someone wins it. It also lists JILI slot games among its popular choices.

The key numbers are the RTP (the average share returned to players) and the volatility (how big and how rare the wins are). A game with an RTP of 96% keeps 4% on average over a very large number of spins.

Rules

  • Every spin is decided by a random number generator and is independent of the last.
  • You are paid when matching symbols fall on an active payline, according to the paytable.
  • Wild symbols can substitute for others; scatters often trigger free spins or bonus rounds.
  • A higher stake raises both the possible win and the speed of losing.
  • Progressive slots add a share of every bet to a jackpot that is won rarely.
  • The RTP is a long-run average over a very large number of spins; one session can be far above or below it.

How these numbers are worked out

RTP is the percentage of all bets paid back on average over a very large number of spins. For a 96% RTP, the house edge is 4%: of every 100 staked, about 4 is kept on average over the long run. The RTP is shown in the game info screen and is not changed by how you play.

Tips for playing sensibly

Check the RTP in the game info: higher is better for you, but all slots keep an edge.

Volatility matters: high-volatility slots pay rarely but bigger; low-volatility pay small wins often.

Set a budget and time limit before you start and stop when you reach it.

A hot or cold machine does not exist: every spin is random.

Bonuses with wagering requirements are a cost: read the terms before accepting one.

Common myths

Slots FAQ

Can I tell when a slot will pay?

No. Every spin is decided by a random number generator, so a slot is never due.

What is a good RTP?

Higher is better for the player, but even a 97% slot keeps 3% on average over the long run.

Are progressive slots worth it?

The jackpot can be very large, but it is won rarely and part of every bet funds it, so the base game usually pays less.
